Started this week: The first part of the Tom McKean story
New this week is Tom McKean. After many requests, the Tom McKean story starts this week. As a kind of experiment, we are doing it as a serial over several weeks. Undoubtedly Scotland's most successful international athlete of the past twenty or thirty year - and probably longer than that - he really should be here. It will be accessible from 'The Milers' but for now, the first and second parts are accessible here We do not usually go as far down the endurance scale as 800m but Tom is a special case.
There are also three new video links from Graham MacIndoe in New York with Don Macgregor, Yvonne Murray and Nat Muir in action.
I gave Ron Morrison a copy of Clydesdale Harriers handbooks from 1885 to 1914 and he has now put them up on the CC & RR website at www.salroadrunningandcrosscountrymedalists.co.uk where you go to the Archive (bottom of left hand navigation pane) and then you will find it at the bottom of the BOOKS section. Well worth a look, they are wonderfully detailed with lists of members names and addresses, annual report and a constitution that should be read! .
Finally, it is often said of a runner that 'he could have done better',' he didn't reach his full potential', etc and these are fair enough comments. It is seldom asked who has exceeded what seemed like his or her limits early on, it is seldom that we look for the inspirational but unsung athletes. Well, if you want to see a prime candidate for who is Scotland's most 'over-performing' athlete, use this link and read the article!
I would like to acknowledge a lot of assistance from Colin Youngson as well as from Alistair McFarlane, Ron Morrison, Charles Bannerman, Hugh Barrow, Arnold Black, Mike Johnston, Walter Eadie, Alex Wilson, Arnold Black, Peter McGregor, Don MacGregor, Sandra Branney, Donald MacKenzie, Joe Small, David Hall, Doug MacDonald, Graham MacDonald, Graham McIndoe, Graham Bennison, Andy Currie, Brian Howie, Alex Jackson, Chris Holloway, Fiona Meldrum, Jim Russell , Brian Scobie and others in the research and writing of the various pages. Meanwhile - The photograph below is one of Graham's. It was at Meadowbank in 1981. The Clydesdale Harrier is Steven Darling.
